Shades of Winter Athletes | Carissa Moore

To celebrate our sponsorship and the athletes involved in the Shades of Winter project we sat down with each of the athletes to chat through what the film means to them and what inspires them to get out every day to unleash their remarkable in their sports.

Fifth in the series is professional surfer Carissa Moore. Carissa is no doubt the biggest name in women’s surfing with three WSL World Tour Golds under her belt – she is not afraid to compete against the guys and pull moves like no other women can in the water. Carissa achieves this all with a sense of humility, which makes her a truly lovable and inspirational athlete. This lady may not be the biggest freekier in the world but still her Surfer’s Hall of Fame accolades fit the profile of one of the most exquisite female extreme athletes…which is all the Shades of Winter team need.

“I want to leave a message that I love surfing and I get to do what I love, but I’ve also gone through a lot of challenges, too,” Carissa says. “I want other girls to know I understand what they’re going through. I want to empower women to believe in themselves and do what they love.”

Biggest Achievements: 3-time WSL Women’s World Tour Champion, youngest (16) champion at a triple crown event,  rookie of the year 2010 ASP World Tour, first woman to compete in Oahu’s Triple Crown of surfing, an all-male event featuring the world’s top surfers.

Check out our Q&A for an exclusive insight on Carissa:

Q. How did you begin surfing? What was your earliest memory in the sport?

Carissa. I began surfing when I was 5 years old. The earliest memory was tandem surfing with my dad at Waikiki Beach. Within a few years I had discovered my passion for the ocean.

Q. When did you know you wanted to dedicate your life to surfing?

Carissa. At first it was just a fun thing my dad and I did at the beach. By the time I was 12 I had a serious conversation with my dad and made a verbal commitment to him that I wanted to become the best in the world.

Q. What is your life motto?

Carissa. Live your dreams. Never give up. Be your authentic self. And don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.

Q. Where is your favourite place to take off and surf?

Carissa. No place is better than home in Hawaii but I do love Lower Trestles in Southern California.

Q. Do you take your phone down to the beach with you?

Carrissa. Yes, it’s always by my side protected by a LifeProof case. It’s perfect for checking the surf with Madicseaweed.

Carissa. Winning my third world title at home in Hawaii.

Q. What are your ideal surf conditions?

Carissa. A fun, playful, long right hand point break.
