Night of the Jumps | Basel

Last weekend saw the second round of the FIM Freestyle MX World Championship return, this time to Basel Switzerland. Brice Izzo’s wrist injury from Saturday’s event meant only 10 riders started in the St. Jakobshalle arena but that didn’t limit the action in the roaring arena!

So, what went down…?

In what was his 70th Championship appearance David Rinaldo was hoping to make up for his defeat the previous evening with a SERIOUS array of tricks including the Double Grab flip, the Cali-Roll and Hart Attack Flip but alas was pipped to pole position by none other than World Champion Maikel Melero. Like the day before Remi Bizouard (FRA), Petr Pilat (CZE) and Rob Adelberg (AUS) moved easily into Sunday’s final round. German Team LifeProof athlete Luc Ackermann joined them to make up the final 6 final riders.

Although Pat Bowden (AUS) and Marc Pinyol (ESP) didn’t make it into the final they somewhat made up for it by fighting it out for Best Whip, which Pat went on to win.

The final saw ‘wunderkid’ Luc Ackermann charge the course with huge tricks but a small error on landing moved him back to 6th position.

Like in Linz, Maikel Melero could again do no wrong this weekend. He started his run with the California Roll over the 23 metre gap to 1-hand landing and finished his run with the Flair Nac to cement his win with a 28-point lead and guarantee his second contest win in Switzerland. This win means a clean sweep for the Spanish champion in the first two events of the year. Next up sees the riders travel to Berlin where Melero is in the position to set a new record in the form of the longest NIGHT of the JUMPs winning streak! Exciting times ahead!
